The Yamaha CD/RW seems to work when writing data CDs from Linux. Audio CDs don't get recognized in CD players (the boom box) when burned from Linux, and when burned from Windows they have properly timed and partitioned lengths of silence.

I think this thing is dead or dying.

So, yesterday we went out and purchased an LG GCE-8520B (52x24x52) IDE drive. I'll install it today and see how it goes. This will mean that CD burning will probably be restricted to Windows because the Atapi-SCSI emulation under Linux looks like a right royal pain to configure.

Don't know what I'll do with the Yamaha.

This is a collection of techical information, much of it learned the hard way. Consider it a lab book or a /info directory. I doubt much of it will be of use to anyone else.
