Problem

Setting the computer's hostname hasn't changed for the last 20 years or so. This is a boring state of affairs, we need some different, unintuitive way of setting it, ideally hopelessly integrated into systemd somehow.

Solution

# hostnamectl set-hostname $HOSTNAME

This is a collection of techical information, much of it learned the hard way. Consider it a lab book or a /info directory. I doubt much of it will be of use to anyone else.
