Outlook Experiment

IN the interests of having a unified email client (my employer requires the use of Exchange) I attempted to use Outlook to also read my home email.

After less than a day I have given up on this idea because:

  • Outlook's handling of the IMAP mailbox is inconsistent with its handling of the Exchange mailbox
  • I could never figure out how to make the signatures to work properly with the multiple email accounts
  • antispam in Outlook is poor as compared to things like Thunderbird (it is actually disabled for my Exchange account as we have a Barracuda doing the gross filtering and the Outlook filtering kept catching non-spam; it is less painful to run with it disabled)
  • this morning Outlook just hung while trying to read my IMAP mailbox

This is a collection of techical information, much of it learned the hard way. Consider it a lab book or a /info directory. I doubt much of it will be of use to anyone else.
