Problem

I am trying to install X and it isn't working. I have a nVidia video adapter and I don't know what it really is.

Device is detected like so:

# lspci | grep -i nv
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation: Unknown device 06fd (rev a1)

Solution

There is a page with the PCI vendor codes for nVidia >>here (www.pcidatabase.com) From that you should be able to figure out which driver/family needs to be installed.

In our example above, the 06fd is a NVidia NVS 295.

This is a collection of techical information, much of it learned the hard way. Consider it a lab book or a /info directory. I doubt much of it will be of use to anyone else.
