Startup Hang

Problem

Installed OpenOffice 2.1 on a RedHat ES 4 U2 system. When the startup script soffice is executed, nothing is displayed.

Running soffice by hand shows the startup script is actually running, just hung.

ps -ef shows a javaldx process doing nothing.

Solution

javaldx has found a java binary to run which, on initial invocation, is wanting the user to agree to an EULA. It cannot pop up the "agree to me!" window and so usefully hangs instead.

So either figure out how to get the java to pop up the window interactively (correct), or remove the call to javaldx in soffice (incorrect but easier to do).

This is a collection of techical information, much of it learned the hard way. Consider it a lab book or a /info directory. I doubt much of it will be of use to anyone else.
