Dual-Head LCD X on a ATI Radeon 9600

This is highly specific to my needs and may not do anything for you, but I have a bunch of these at one of my sites so I need to remember how to do it.

The problem encountered was that after installing RHEL 5.1, the system-config-display application could launch X to configure it, but very slowly, and would hang completely once the second display was enabled as a separate device. The out-of-the-box configuration was totally useless, with X hogging the CPU and the display being effectively unresponsive. You could still ssh into the box from other stations and kill things, but that's not especially useful.

One of the engineers had to mess around with this manually to make it work.

I don't know how much of my problem is a "dualhead sucks" problem and how much of it is a "xorg sucks" (or a "RHEL sucks") problem.
