Fixing Internationalization

The RedHat i18n configuration has a side-effect of distorting things like man pages when you are connected from a Sun or a Windows system. This is because the RedHat system is trying to internationalize things in a way that the default, dumb C locale systems cannot deal with correctly.

To fix it, edit /etc/sysconfig/i18n and remove the .UTF-8 extention to the value of the LANG variable.

This is a collection of techical information, much of it learned the hard way. Consider it a lab book or a /info directory. I doubt much of it will be of use to anyone else.
