Solaris 7 EOL Announced

On August 15, 2008, Solaris 7 exited EOSL Phase 2. Except through custom support agreements, all support for Solaris 7 is terminated. On April 1, 2009, Solaris 8 enters EOSL Phase 2. Vintage patch entitlement (for patches developed ON OR after 4/1/09) requires purchase of the Solaris 8 Vintage Patch Service.

I'm always a bit sad to see operating systems go out of useful use. I remember when Solaris 7 was shiny and brand new, and the new Java installer ran so awfully slowly on what was then state-of-the-art Ultra 5 and Ultra 10 computers. Solaris 7 didn't last as long as some other versions, it seems to me like we hopped to Solaris 8 almost right away, but of course that was all customer-driven at the time. I just don't recall having the same number of build systems for Solaris 7 that I had for 2.5, 2.5.1, 2.6, and 8.

I did run Solaris 7 on my main workstation for quite some time, and even >>built KDE on it. That was quite a fight at the time.

This is a collection of techical information, much of it learned the hard way. Consider it a lab book or a /info directory. I doubt much of it will be of use to anyone else.
