Selecting 32- or 64-bit mode for Solaris

If you have the 64-bit stuff installed (which is the default for most versions of Solaris) and have a processor which will run in 32-bit mode (Ultra-IIe, and Ultra-III or higher will not support 32-bit mode), you can pick at boot time whether you want to run in 32-bit or 64-bit mode.

At the OK prompt:

ModeOK prompt command
32OK> setenv boot-file kernel/unix
OK> reset
64OK> setenv boot-file kernel/sparcv9/unix
OK> reset

This aparrently works for Solaris 2.6, 7, 8, and maybe 9 (only tested by me on solaris 7 and 8).

This is a collection of techical information, much of it learned the hard way. Consider it a lab book or a /info directory. I doubt much of it will be of use to anyone else.
