How to remote start VMs on VMware Server

  1. Check the state of the VM:
    # vmware-cmd /path/to/vm/machine.vmx getstate
  2. Start it up:
    # vmware-cmd /path/to/vm/machine.vmx start
Note: /path/to/vm/machine.vmx must be absolute, not relative (ie: ./machine.vmx is not valid, even if your prompt is in /path/to/vm).

This is a collection of techical information, much of it learned the hard way. Consider it a lab book or a /info directory. I doubt much of it will be of use to anyone else.
