Problem

I am running Windows 7 64-bit. I have just installed VMware Workstation 6.5.4.

When the computer boots, it quickly comes to the blue "log in page" but without any login icons. The computer pauses for about seven minutes, then the icons show up and I can log in normally.

Other Clue

In the event log, there is a seven minute gap, which is ended by the message:

"The VMware Authorization Service service hung on starting"

Solution

Change the start up type for the service VMware Authorization Service from Automatic to Automatic (Delayed Start).

Boot up times will return to normal. However the Authorization service won't start for a couple of minutes, and you won't be able to run VMware Workstation until it starts.

It is still faster than waiting the 7 minutes though.

This is a collection of techical information, much of it learned the hard way. Consider it a lab book or a /info directory. I doubt much of it will be of use to anyone else.
