Problem

BSOD:

Stop: c0000218 {Registry File Failure} The registry cannot load the hive (file): \SystemRoot\System32\Config\SOFTWARE or its log or alternate

Tedious Solution

Note that I used the Linux-based System Rescue CD instead of the recovery console. If you do that, you have to know that the repair hive files (step one) are present, but of course the cases are different (ie the sam file is ../../repair/sam, not ../../repair/SAM) so be careful about that.

You might be able to do the System Information Volume step from the System Rescue CD as well.

This is a collection of techical information, much of it learned the hard way. Consider it a lab book or a /info directory. I doubt much of it will be of use to anyone else.
