The answer is, yes, things work a lot better when the calling script controls the table creation and removal.

reset-db also removes the rrd files.

I fixed a problem with my sort. I was sorting by value, not by key. And backwards. I'm still running into the problem that the time periods are overlapping between runs, so I think I'll have to do the import of data from the postgres to the rrd as a completely separate process.
