Problem

Autosupport mail messages don't get sent.

If syslogging is working, you might see such messages as

May 26 11:52:00 xx.xx.0.47 [asup.post.badUrl:warning]: Autosupport was not posted because there was an invalid or missing url specified (DRIVE NHT DATA)
May 26 11:52:00 xx.xx.0.47 [asup.smtp.sent:notice]: System Notification mail sent: System Alert from nas02
May 26 11:52:00 xx.xx.0.47 [asup_main:debug]: sysconfig: validating configuration
May 26 11:52:02 xx.xx.0.47 [sfu.firmwareUpToDate:info]: Firmware is up-to-date on all disk shelves.
May 26 11:52:02 xx.xx.0.47 [sfu.firmwareUpToDate:info]: Firmware is up-to-date on all disk shelves.
May 26 11:52:03 xx.xx.0.47 [asup.post.badUrl:warning]: Autosupport was not posted because there was an invalid or missing url specified (DRIVE NHT DATA)
May 26 11:52:03 xx.xx.0.47 [asup.smtp.sent:notice]: System Notification mail sent: System Notification from nas02 (USER_TRIGGERED (Testing)) INFO
May 26 11:52:03 xx.xx.0.47 [asup.post.drop.enqueue:info]: Autosupport message (200903152200.0) was not posted for host (0), it was dropped from queue due to lack of space
May 26 11:56:24 xx.xx.0.47 [asup.post.badUrl:warning]: Autosupport was not posted because there was an invalid or missing url specified (WEEKLY_LOG)

Solution

At some point, the filer was configured to post autosupport via HTTP or HTTPS instead of via SMTP. (This is fine, except that NetApp occasionally mucks around with what the target URL is supposed to be.) The documentation suggests that this might happen during an upgrade, or your filer might have come out-of-the-box like this.

On the filer, do this:

nas02> options autosupport.support.transport
autosupport.support.transport https
nas02> options autosupport.support.transport smtp

This is a collection of techical information, much of it learned the hard way. Consider it a lab book or a /info directory. I doubt much of it will be of use to anyone else.
