Making Exchange 2003 Use A Smart Host

Start the Exchange System Manager. Navigate:

  • Administrative Groups
  • First Administrative Group
  • Server
  • $ServerName
  • Protocols
  • SMTP
  • Default SMTP Virtual Server
Select Properties, then Advanced. You should find a Smart Host field you can populate. The notes suggest that you put a name there so that if you need to logically move the relay it will be easy to change, however if you want an IP address you should surround it in [square brackets] so that the system treats it as an IP address and not a DNS lookup.

The typically unhelpful 'Help' lies to you about the navigation; it omits the first two steps.

This is a collection of techical information, much of it learned the hard way. Consider it a lab book or a /info directory. I doubt much of it will be of use to anyone else.
