etckeeper basics

(2026-10-13)

(On Ubuntu LTS 24.04)

The apt install does the "git init", so everything else is just git.

Remember the sudo if you are not root.

Minimal identification:

# sudo git config --global user.email "root@localhost"
# sudo git config --global user.name "root"

Workie workie. Remember when looking at logs and commit versions that cron auto-commits if possible every night, so if you're working on something longer term you need to be explicit about commit hashes when doing diffs.
